MOTIVATION: There are a million reasons to improve your health by saying no to sugar laden Halloween treats—so why can’t you think of one when it's right in front of you? Be prepared for these inevitable events by creating a list of your top reasons for staying to a healthy diet/lifestyle. You can carry this piece of paper around with you in your pocket or put in on a sticky note to remind yourself -whenever someone offers you candy. Another tip that tends to work well for most people, pick ONE word that summarizes your drive. Write it down -somewhere that you will see it every morning and every night (bathroom mirrors with dry erase markers is PERFECT). This constant word association will enforce your drive and help you stick to it!
LAST MIN SHOP: The worst temptations come from your own kitchen. Healthy eating becomes infinitely easier when you only stock up on nutritious foods in your home—but during Halloween, candy is typically brought home for visiting trick-or-treaters. Purchasing your trick-or-treat handouts at the last minute will cut down on the amount of time you will feel tempted to grab some sugary snacks for yourself. Still have a bowl overflowing with candy when you finally lock your doors for the night on October 31? Vow that you will throw it out, share any leftovers at work the next day, or contribute to a candy buy-back program that sends the extras to our troops. Another alternative, would be to buy a healthier alternative (i.e. protein snacks, or healthier options which some stores offer now)
REWARD YOURSELF: Completely depriving yourself of your favorite things might benefit your physical health, but remember that your mental health is important, too. Allowing yourself a SMALL and tasty delight won’t send your health or weight spiraling out of control, as long as you consume it moderation. Promise yourself that after you behave yourself during the Halloween parties and days leading up to the 31st, you will allow yourself to enjoy a small amount of whichever Halloween treat you crave the most.
